Resources

International Trumpet Guild: ITG is a group of trumpet players from around the world. The guild presents an annual conference and a quarterly journal filled with articles covering trumpet history, technique, theory, and more.

Brass Musician: Brass Musician Magazine & Forum is a wealth of information on practice and performance tips, how-to articles, and news in the brass world.

New York Philharmonic Digital Archives: More than 500,000 pages of orchestral parts and scores with the original markings by the New York Philharmonic performers and conductors including Leonard Bernstein!

The Lip Rip Blues: Written by my friend and former roommate, Jonathan Vieker, this is a great resource covering the very real and very under-discussed topic of lip injuries. Jonathan talks about his experience, including a walk-through of the surgical repair and recovery processes.

Embouchures.com: The go-to source for knowledge regarding embouchure troubles and injuries by Lucinda Lewis, author of the books Broken Embouchures, Embouchure Rehabilitation, and the Buzz Pipe Book.

MSHSAA: The Missouri State High School Activities Association. This site contains all the rules and regulations regarding solo and ensemble competitions. It also contains the Prescribed Music List (PML), which is a list of all the solos and ensemble pieces that have been approved for competition use.

MBA: The Missouri Bandmasters Association is in charge of the All-District and All-State band, orchestra, and choir auditions and ensembles. The website contains calendars for auditions and performances as well as the lists of required audition materials.

MOAJE: Similar to MBA, the Missouri Association of Jazz Educators is in charge of the All-District and All-State Jazz bands. The website contains calendars for auditions and performances as well as the lists of required audition materials.

Musical Glossary for Kids: An introductory list of musical terms, both English and foreign. A great place to get started learning the meaning of some of the most common terms you’ll come across when learning music. Special thanks to Graham and his grandmother, Corine, for bringing this resource to my attention!

Classical Music Terms: An extensive glossary of classical music terms from Naxos Records. Hundreds of musical terms listed alphabetically from accelerando to zauberoper, and searchable for quick reference. A great next step once you’ve mastered the previous glossary.

A Playground for Music Education and Music Theory: This site takes an in-depth look at music reading and music theory, with links to more information on each topic! Special thanks to Greer Bradford for passing this one along!
