About
Wesley Campbell began his musical training at age 8, starting piano lessons with the organist at his church, and soon after began studying under jazz singer and pianist, Kathleen Holeman. At age 11 Wesley finally began his pursuit of the trumpet. In high school he began private study with Ron Fortune of Kansas City, earning spots in several All-District and All-State bands, jazz bands, and orchestras. He then earned a performance scholarship to Truman State University in Kirksville, MO where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree.
While at Truman, Wesley studied with Dr. Gregory Jones and was able to attend masterclasses and work with several professional trumpeters including Philip Clark (retired) of the Kansas City Symphony, Tage Larsen of the Chicago Symphony, Vlad Lavrik (formerly) of the Russian National Symphony, Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer of Rice University, and international soloist Hakan Hardenberger. At the end of his time at Truman, he was awarded academic honors and a full tuition scholarship to the University of New Mexico for graduate study.
Studying primarily under Jeffrey Piper at UNM, Wesley was also able to attend masterclasses and work with jazz artist Bobby Shew, Larry Zalkind of the Utah Symphony, John Marchiando of the New Mexico Symphony, and Billy Ray Hunter of the Metropolitan Opera. While in Albuquerque, Wesley was trumpet assistant at La Cueva High School, served as associate membership director for the International Trumpet Guild, and completed a Master of Music degree.
Professional highlights include a tour of Italy and Greece with the Truman Brass and Cantoria, “Outta Sync” (an interactive band at Worlds of Fun theme park), the Ottumwa and Quincy Symphonies, the New Mexico Brass Quintet, New Music New Mexico, and groups which have opened for the Jim Widner Big Band, Mike Metheny, Kenny Rogers, Oleta Adams, and Little Richard. For the Spring 2012 semester, Wesley served as the interim Professor of Trumpet at Lindenwood University. Currently, Wesley performs with the St. Louis Philharmonic, is an active freelance musician in the greater St. Louis area, and teaches trumpet out of his home in Manchester. He has previously taught students ranging in age from 8 to 72 in both classical and jazz styles, and is well-versed in baroque (non-valved) trumpet performance.
